Position Overview

Position title: Psychiatry Research

Salary range: Minimum pay is set by UC salary scales. Base pay range: $107,300 - $235,400. Salary is negotiated annually and may include additional compensation if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan. Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry within the School of Medicine at UC San Diego () is committed to academic excellence. Faculty provide exceptional clinical care, cutting‑edge research, and educational excellence. We seek basic, translational, and clinician scientists to join our faculty in a collaborative environment that supports interdisciplinary research and training approaches.

Candidates interested in using cutting‑edge methodologies—such as artificial intelligence approaches to large molecular, imaging, and/or clinical datasets—to illuminate the nature, mechanisms, and/or treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct pioneering research in psychiatry and mental health.
  • Secure and manage extramural funding to support research initiatives.
  • Publish high‑impact findings in leading scientific journals.
  • Mentor and inspire the next generation of psychiatrists and researchers.
  • Develop and teach advanced courses in psychiatry and related fields (see ).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to identify mechanisms and enhance clinical practices and patient care.
  • Engage in community outreach to promote mental health awareness and education.

The appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor level based on the candidate’s background and experience. Series includes 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In‑Residence with secured extramural funding or 100% Ladder Rank.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • PhD in health sciences or related fields and/or an MD or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in clinical, translational, and/or basic research, an independent extramurally‑funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or similar). 5+ years of research published in high‑impact journals with 1+ grants and/or publications in psychiatric research.
  • 5+ years of a track record of teaching and/or mentorship activities.
  • MD or equivalent with clinical duties: board‑certified or board‑eligible in related field and eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification.
