DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is the administrator of the residential life program at the college and is responsible for building and maintaining a positive, safe and secure, living/learning community. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is instrumental in the continued development of the administrative and programmatic organization of the college’s residential life unit.

The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is an active partner in the College’s educational enterprise and works collaboratively and creatively to establish a comprehensive living and learning environment at the College that is reflective of the College’s philosophy and theme.

The Eighth College residential community houses approximately twenty-three hundred (at steady state) undergraduate students who reside in residence halls or apartments. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life does not reside on campus, the positions supervises three Assistant Directors and forty-six undergraduate para-professional staff who live in the Eighth College housing complex. The Residential Life office strives to build a positive and safe living-learning environment in which students can grow and develop.

The staff provide programs and services that support the academic mission of the University by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.

The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life works with the Dean of Student Affairs, the College Provost, and other college administrators regarding residential life issues. Direct responsibilities include unit operations management, annual budget development and administration, professional and paraprofessional staff training, supervision and management, student educational and social development, program development, student judicial education, and student counseling. The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life also facilitates collaboration with other units of the college, Housing Dining & Hospitality Services and other campus resources to develop, support and implement safety and security policies and procedures as well as provide on-call emergency response for the residential community.

The Associate Dean of Student Affairs/Director of Residence Life is engaged in strategic planning for the unit in collaboration with the Dean of Student Affairs, Provost and/or College senior staff, promotes the UC San Diego Principles of Community, and directs the department toward meeting the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan. This position requires high levels of and demonstrated experience in independent thinking, decision-making, diplomacy, policy development and implementation, problem analysis, and strategic planning.

Oversees the residence life implementation of the Eighth College non-academic curriculum. Identifies emerging needs and trends in the student experience and provides guidance and solutions to meet those needs.
