Overview

Position:
Assistant Professor, Mathematics at San Diego Mesa College. Assignments may include some combination of day and/or evening classes. The Mathematics department seeks an exceptional faculty member to join our team in support of students, the department, and the college mission.

Salary and Benefits

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step C – Class 6, Step C ($6,933.44– $8,849.03) per month based on the 2024 AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Faculty Salary Schedule. Initial salary placement is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and is non-negotiable. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.

The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer-paid medical, dental, and vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. Benefits are provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, with any required adjustment made within the first pay period.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate credit coursework in statistics, learning technologies and pure or applied mathematics
  • A minimum of 2 years experience teaching statistics courses at a community college
  • Ability to make effective classroom presentations with knowledge of learning theory, active learning techniques, and subject matter mastery, specifically for historically excluded and underrepresented student populations
  • Ability to clearly explain mathematics through a conceptual framework
  • Ability to effectively utilize technology in the classroom as a method of teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE)
  • Knowledge of recent legislation impacting math education
  • Demonstrated professional growth and participation in professional learning
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, administrators and staff
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
Foreign Degree

Applicants with foreign degrees must have coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of NACES or ACEI. A copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the online application.

Timeline and Conditions

Tentative Timeline (subject to amendments). Selected candidate must complete pre-employment requirements including official transcripts, tuberculosis exam certificate, fingerprinting via Live Scan, eligibility to work in the United States (I-9), and new hire processing. Initial contract is one year with potential renewal for up to an additional year.

Employment After Retirement

Retired annuitants may need to reinstate with CalPERS or CalSTRS; refer to their websites for details.

Additional Information

Employees may be transferred to any site at the Chancellor’s option. Contract employees become members of STRS upon appointment.
