Assistant Learning Specialist and Tutor Coordinator
The Assistant Learning Specialist and Tutor Coordinator plays an important role in supporting the academic success of San Diego State University student-athletes through individualized academic support and comprehensive tutoring services. Under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Support Services, this position coordinates the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) tutor program while providing one-on-one academic support to a designated caseload of at‑risk student-athletes.
The incumbent works collaboratively with academic advisors, learning specialists, faculty, and campus partners to connect student-athletes with academic resources, develop effective study strategies, and foster independent learning. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student-athlete achievement by supporting academic progress, personal development, and graduation success within a nationally competitive NCAA Division I athletics program.
- Coordinate the SASS tutor program, including tutor recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, communication, and program support.
- Provide individualized academic support to a designated caseload of at‑risk student-athletes by teaching study strategies, monitoring academic progress, and connecting students with campus resources.
- Collaborate with learning specialists, academic advisors, faculty, and campus partners to coordinate tutoring services, academic support, and student success initiatives.
- Maintain tutoring schedules, reports, databases, and academic records while monitoring tutoring participation and supporting NCAA academic integrity standards.
- Assist with SASS programs and initiatives, including orientation, Summer Bridge, Aztecs Going Pro, academic recognition events, and other student success activities.
- Make a meaningful impact by helping student-athletes achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals.
- Build experience in academic support, tutoring coordination, student development, and NCAA Division I athletics.
- Work collaboratively with advisors, learning specialists, faculty, coaches, and campus partners in a student-centered environment.

- Full-time (1.0 time base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027, with the possibility of reappointment.
- Non-exempt under FLSA and eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
- Position located on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
The Department of Athletics oversees intercollegiate athletics at SDSU, employing over 150 staff across 17 offices. The department supports 18 sport programs and approximately 450 student-athletes.
Education and ExperienceTypical requirement: one year of professional Student Services experience at entry or trainee level, or equivalent graduate‑level education. A four‑year bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field is preferred. Graduate coursework may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

- Experience providing academic support services, including tutoring, curriculum advising, data collection, analysis, and program development.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and relationship building skills.
