Adjunct Surgical Technology Theory Instructor
- North-West College
- San Diego

The Adjunct Surgical Technology Theory Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality classroom instruction to students enrolled in the Surgical Technology Program. The instructor delivers theory-based education that prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors required for entry-level practice in the surgical technology profession.

The instructor ensures course content is current, instructional methods support student learning, and all students are treated fairly and equitably. The Adjunct Surgical Technology Theory Instructor reports to and works under the direction of the Surgical Technology Program Director.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Teach assigned Surgical Technology theory courses in accordance with approved curriculum, course objectives, and program outcomes.
  • Deliver engaging classroom instruction through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, case studies, and technology-enhanced learning activities.
  • Provide instruction in areas including surgical procedures and terminology, surgical instrumentation and equipment, aseptic technique and infection prevention, operating room practices and safety standards, surgical patient care concepts, pharmacology and anesthesia considerations, professional ethics and communication in the healthcare environment.
  • Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, presentations, assignments, and assessments aligned with program objectives.
  • Administer, evaluate, and maintain records of quizzes, exams, assignments, and other student assessments.
  • Provide timely feedback and academic support to promote student success.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and academic progress.
  • Identify student learning needs and provide additional support or remediation when appropriate.
  • Maintain current knowledge of surgical technology practices, industry standards, and healthcare trends.
  • Assist with the selection and review of textbooks, instructional resources, and course materials.
  • Serve as a professional role model by promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, accountability, and workplace expectations.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, program activities, training sessions, and curriculum review as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and faculty to support program effectiveness and student achievement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and comply with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications knowledge and skills include:

  • Knowledge of current surgical technology practices, operating room procedures, instrumentation, and patient safety standards.
  • Ability to effectively teach adult learners in a classroom environment.
  • Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
  • Ability to evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, clinical partners, and advisory board members.
  • Ability to utilize educational technology and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Commitment to student success and continuous professional development.

Qualifications education and experience include:

  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of operating room experience or teaching in the field, or a combination of the two, within five years prior to hire date.
  • A credential in the field of Surgical Technology that is through a national credentialing organization accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is not required.
  • Requires a current certification through the NBSTSA (CST certification)
  • AA or AS in any subject
