Art Center College of Design is searching for an experienced Studio Assistant, Printmaking Studio to join our team.

The salary range for this position: $22.00 - 25.00 per hour; part-time schedule, up to 15 hours per week.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, Interdisciplinary Studies, the Studio Assistant is responsible for maintaining the studio’s equipment, assisting the instructor(s) in support of general course instruction activities during class and during open lab time. This includes Printmaking Studio upkeep, post-instruction cleanup, proper organization of materials, safety procedures, and assisting students in the completion of class assignments.

This is a part-time on-site position of up to 15 hours per week.

Essential Functions Studio Operations — 50%
  • Assist Lead Studio Assistant in daily upkeep in the studio
  • Prepare supplies for workshops and demos
  • Assist in communicating assignments or other information to students
  • Facilitate regular deep cleaning of studios and equipment
  • Post-instruction cleanup and proper reorganization of materials
  • Enforce and abide by all College policies
  • Work with the Lead Studio Assistant, coworkers, student workers, and Director of Operations to maintain a safe and secure working and learning environment for students, faculty and staff
  • Occasional assistance as needed in Archetype Press
  • Willingness and ability to cross-train in letterpress processes
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Support — 35%
  • Provide studio training for studio access and use
  • Assure all students understand the fundamental concepts of all processes demonstrated and maintain documentation on demonstrations for asynchronous access
  • Assist with questions from students about materials, procedures, and safety within the Printmaking Studio
  • Oversee student safety during open lab hours
Shop Safety — 15%
  • Help guide the student in using equipment
  • Maintain a safe work environment throughout the department
  • Comply and ensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shop policies, including wearing assigned PPE
  • Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE provided by the College
  • Assist with maintaining general safety and security; monitoring access; and maintaining the appearance, temperature, and overall environment of the Printmaking Studio and Archetype Press

This is a part-time on-site position. Normal shop hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.;
Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Normal work schedule is a 7-hour workday. Must be able to work any shift. Hours are subject to change.

Required Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of analog printing techniques and prior experience working in a printmaking studio
  • Completion of at least two college-level courses in printmaking
  • Knowledge of best practices of safely operating presses and printing machinery and handling supplies, including cleaning chemicals
  • Experience in identifying and reporting unsafe conditions
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
