    • Prior experience in an elementary classroom setting.
    • Managing a classroom, building strong relationships with students and families, and bringing genuine enthusiasm for hands-on science and engineering to the role.
    • IB or other inquiry-based frameworks.

Please note, this is a temporarily funded position for the  School Year. While current probationary and permanent employees will be excessed when funding ends, employment for the following year is not guaranteed for temporary employees.

Examples of Duties

The 0.4 FTE In-School Resource Teacher assigned to support McKinley Elementary will plan and deliver hands-on science and engineering lessons for students in grades 2–5, with the possible inclusion of grade 1, as part of the site's International Baccalaureate enrichment rotation, using the Smart Labs STEAM model. The position is scheduled two days per week.

A typical day will include teaching multiple back-to-back class periods as students rotate through the enrichment classes, guiding small groups and whole classes through inquiry-based science and engineering activities, setting up and managing lab materials and equipment between sessions, and collaborating with the IB coordinator and classroom teachers to align lessons with IB units of inquiry. The teacher will also monitor student engagement and safety during hands-on tasks, and maintain the lab space and supplies in between rotations.

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Work with the IB coordinator and grade 1–5 classroom teachers to align STEAM lessons with IB units of inquiry; coordinates with the IB coordinator on rotation scheduling and program alignment; may consult with the site principal on scheduling and resource needs; occasionally collaborates with other resource/enrichment teachers (art, music, PE, etc.) who share the same rotation block.
  • Deliver science/engineering lessons as students rotate through; set up and break down lab stations and materials between classes; supervise students during hands-on and lab-safety-sensitive activities; manage classroom behavior and engagement within short rotation blocks; communicate any student concerns to classroom teachers.
  • Plan and prep lessons/materials for the following week’s rotations; inventory and restock lab supplies; communicate with classroom teachers and the IB coordinator about upcoming units so STEAM lessons reinforce IB content.
  • Map STEAM lessons to the year’s IB units of inquiry in partnership with the IB coordinator and grade-level teams; participate in Smart Labs professional development; help maintain/update the lab’s equipment and supply inventory over the year; may contribute to showcasing student work (science fair, IB exhibition, open house).
