This is a part-time 20% limited position based on the needs of the department.
DESCRIPTIONThe Swim Instructor provides instruction in non-credited recreational or sports activities that require specialized or advanced training to participants of all ages. Requires independent action, initiative and independence to resolve issues. May help train other program instructors.
~Programs are offered seven days a week, from 5am-10pm. Schedules will be determined in advance with program supervisor. Must be able to attend classes that meet during these times. May also include weekends, and occasional daytime classes held either on- or off-campus facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS- Advanced knowledge of program activity.
- Work leadership and interpersonal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
- Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
- Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
- Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs relevant to job duties.
- Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
- May work in youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
- Knowledge of safety precautions needed and ability to ensure compliance/adherence by all class members.
- Knowledge of physical education and kinesiology (as appropriate).
- Ability to teach specified discipline to a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to create programs geared to individual and group needs.
- Ability to handle conflict:
Ability to recognize, respond to, and de-escalate conflicts or behavioral challenges while maintaining a calm, professional working environment. - Public Speaking:
Personable and comfortable with public contact, including speaking before and managing large, diverse groups of participants.
- Previous experience working with age level specific to an activity is preferred.
- Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
- This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
