Director, Halcolu Data Science Institute at University of California San Diego. Salary range: $200,000 – $400,000. Base salary from UCOP tables: $150,100 – $241,400. Open date:

December 31, 2026. The position is a tenured full‑professor appointment with an initial three‑year term and up to two renewals.
The HDSI Director provides intellectual leadership, academic entrepreneurship, and operational management for the Institute. The role positions HDSI for growth, enhances interdisciplinary collaboration across campus, and secures philanthropic support.
Responsibilities- Develop a strategic vision for the Institute and chart its future in data science.
- Recruit, retain, and develop world‑class faculty and staff.
- Promote interdisciplinary partnerships within HDSI and throughout UC San Diego.
- Build and scale academic programs in data science at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
- Lead external partnerships to expand impact and generate philanthropic support.
- Manage a budget of approximately $12 million, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for HDSI nationally and internationally.
- Distinguished record of research relevant to HDSI’s mission and significant innovations in the field.
- Accomplishments in education or training that support a tenured appointment at a UC campus.
- Recognized leadership in data science spanning foundational science and applied domains such as climate, health, economics, public policy, and other areas of human life.
- Excellent record of integrity, fairness, and ethical standards.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, demonstrated through inclusive culture and outreach.
- Broad national and/or international stature in a relevant field.
- Team‑building and collaborative leadership skills.
- Management skills for large, complex, evolving organizations.
- Industry engagement and fundraising experience.
