DESCRIPTION

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Responsible for the advising, administration management and implementation of the department undergraduate program.

Duties include:

student advising, curriculum management, course administration and implementation, class scheduling, registration. Serve as an advisor to the Undergraduate Affairs Committee, recommending and implementing policies, regulations and procedures affecting the undergraduate program.

Evaluate final degree checks, petitions, etc... Serve as liaison to other departments on campus in matters related to the undergraduate student affairs issues and topics.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Experience and demonstrated ability to clearly explain and offer guidance on university regulations, procedures, and policies to current and prospective students and the public. Demonstrate skills and experience to advise/counsel and listen to diverse personalities using independent and mature judgment. Skill and experience in effective one-on-one counseling, advising and listening. Ability to evaluate needs, options and guide decision making.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Demonstrated working knowledge of various university systems related to undergraduate student affairs programs and demonstrated skills using various automated systems, spreadsheet, databases, etc. Working knowledge of University systems such as ISIS, Triton Link, Blink, IFIS.

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. General education requirements, educational organizations at university levels, subject curriculum, to ensure effective interpretation of educational material and regulations. Knowledge of University and departmental policies and procedures relating to undergraduate, course scheduling, and student employment.

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. Knowledge of University of California and UCSD policies and procedures relating to travel, accounting, and entertainment. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to undergraduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department's goals and objectives for the undergraduate program.

  • Interpersonal skills. Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, humor, and flexibility. Ability to deal with stressful and unpleasant situations with composure and calm. Ability to independently exercise sound and professional judgement to handle confidential and sensitive matters appropriately. Proven ability to handle confidential information/material in a discrete manner.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Excellent communications skills to communicate with all levels including deans, faculty, staff, students and the public in a professional manner. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally in a professional, concise and courteous manner.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Skill in analysis, development, implementation and management of academic and student programs. Ability to analyze and evaluate student data and academic records.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated skill to organize time, adjust priorities, meet established deadlines while working with changing priorities and frequent interruptions.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, exercising creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities.
