Position Overview

Position title:

Director

Salary range: $200,000 - $400,000 (base $150,100 - $241,400). Off‑scale salaries are awarded as needed to remain competitive.

The University of California San Diego seeks an internationally recognized leader in data sciences to serve as Director of the Halcolu Data Science Institute (HDSI). The Director will propel HDSI into its next phase of growth, leveraging the institute’s resources to advance high‑impact research and graduate education.

The appointment will be to a tenured full professorship with an initial three‑year term and up to two renewals. The Director will report to the Dean of the Halcolu School of Data Science and Computing and will be responsible for strategic direction, academic programs, and operational management of a unit comprising 53 faculty, 17 staff, and 1,600 students with an approximate budget of $12 M.

• Create a vision for HDSI that charts the path toward the future of data science at UC San Diego.
• Recruit, retain, and develop a world‑class faculty and staff.
• Promote and champion interdisciplinary partnerships across HDSI and throughout UC San Diego.
• Build and scale academic programs in data science.
• Lead external partnerships to expand HDSI’s impact and generate philanthropic support.

• Distinction as a researcher in a field relevant to HDSI’s mission, with a distinguished record of innovations and contributions.
• Accomplishments in education or training suitable for a tenure‑track appointment at a University of California campus.
• Widely recognized record of leadership in data‑science domains spanning scientific foundations and applied areas such as climate, health, economics, and public policy.

• Demonstrated integrity, fairness, candor, selflessness, and the highest ethical standards.
• Commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, with experience creating an inclusive culture.
• National or international stature in a relevant field.
• Leadership skills for team building and successful collaborative programs.
• Management experience directing a large, complex, evolving organization, with evidence‑based decision‑making.
• Extensive track record of industry engagement and fundraising.
• Effective communication with faculty, administrators, staff, and external stakeholders.
