Organization Description

Established in 1963, the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) is a 501(c) non-profit organization. In collaboration with academic partner Colorado State University (CSU) for the Fall 2027 voyage and University of San Diego (USD) for the Spring 2028 voyage, ISE will deliver the Semester at Sea® (SAS) program, one of the longest operating higher education study abroad programs. Semester at Sea® provides its students a global comparative education through classroom and experiential learning in the field.

The Semester at Sea® floating campus, the MV World Odyssey, carries around 550 students plus faculty, staff, and others. The duration of the semester voyage is typically 105 days, including visits to 8-10 countries. ISE conducts two-semester voyages annually. See semesteratsea.org for more information.

Position Description

The shipboard Librarian is a member of the voyage faculty and is responsible for managing the Semester at Sea® shipboard library and creating an inclusive, accessible environment for all voyagers in the Academic Success Center. While aboard, the ship’s Librarian provides library services as described below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The individual in this position must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

Prior to the voyage

During the semester preceding the sailing semester, attend regularly scheduled conference calls and meetings with ISE Academic Affairs, the Semester at Sea® Shore Librarian, and Orientation Trainings.

During the voyage

Provide comprehensive library services to the shipboard community, including class visits, reference, circulation and reserves

Manage collection of approximately 4,000 print volumes and facilitate remote access from the ship to CSU's (Fall 2027) or USD’s (Spring 2028) online collections

Maintain all aspects of the ship's online library catalog, including patron database, circulation, cataloging, and intranet file maintenance

Provide learning management system (Moodle) support for faculty and general IT troubleshooting

Supervise up to 7 shipboard student assistants, including scheduling and ensuring library is staffed from 8 a.m.

- 10 p.m. while at sea

Deliver library orientation to all voyagers, including faculty, staff, and lifelong learners

Attend faculty meetings while on the ship and present as requested

Work with Faculty and Staff to provide accessibility to students with learning accommodations

Provide ongoing critical feedback of library shipboard experience and submit final voyage report to ISE Academic Affairs
