Summary The Gas Free Technician ensures all work functions in confined and enclosed spaces are safe by performing atmospheric testing to ensure the area(s) complies with National Fire Protection Association, NAVSEA, and 29 CFR 1915 requirements. Provides health and safety guidance and support to the workforce. Promotes Total Safety Culture. Ensures that General Dynamics NASSCO maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
Reports to the supervisor of Safety.
- Ability to interact professionally with all levels of management and employees on site
- Posting and follow up inspections of initial Marine Chemist certifications
- Performs daily bump and periodic calibration on gas free testing equipment
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- Performs space inspections and conducts atmospheric tests with supplied testing equipment
- Takes corrective action in the event of adverse inspection results and/or test results
- Demonstrated ability to work and problem solve effectively in a demanding environment. Review current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding all OSHA and other applicable health and safety standards and regulations.
- Establish a close working relationship and communicate with department, area and ship managers on a regular basis by attending meetings and being available for phone calls, email or texts.

- Must possess the following certifications:
- Current Shipyard Competent Person Certificate
- OSHA 10 Hour 1915 Maritime Safety Certificate
- Permit Authorizing Individual (PAI)
- Must have basic knowledge of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered including:
- Applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations
- NAVSEA Standard Items
- Techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards
- Working with hazardous materials
- Shipyard operations
- Safe operation of tools and machinery
- Use of computer software programs (MS Office, iOS applications)
- Ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems
- Must be able to pass pre‑employment drug screening and background check
- Safety sensitive position will require random drug and alcohol testing
- Must be able to obtain access to Department of Defense sites (DBIDS)
- Ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications in order to successfully interact with safety representatives, management and employees.
The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. The role requires perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone. The role also requires prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings.
Must have the ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses. Must be able to transit uneven surfaces and be agile to move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles. Must be able to observe, detect, identify, perceive, recognize, and process information to remain alert and timely comply with all safety requirements.
Must be able to move, transport, and use equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. Duties performed on ships require ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces. This position requires exposure to industrial areas which contain hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and exposure to weather.

- Associate Gas Free Technician: $46,000 – $59,500
- Gas Free Technician I: $56,300 – $77,000
- Gas Free Technician II: $66,500 – $86,000
