Job Summary
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first‑of‑a‑kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Designer to join our ALRE group located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing material planning support and administration for research‑related or production projects of moderate scope, including analysis reporting, expediting, and purchasing. The incumbent advises management of the status of work in progress and identifies potential project problems.
DUTIES& RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for documenting findings, communicating results to engineering staff and may make technical design presentations as required.
- Typically has some intra‑organizational contact and may have some customer contact.
- Develops design solutions for assigned structural products and components.
- Interacts with engineering staff on design concepts and progress.
- May be assigned design responsibility for a portion of a project or program.
- Develops layouts, sketches and blueprints and may investigate design factors such as damage tolerance, durability, and structural modeling.
- Details related structural assemblies, mechanisms, and devices.
- Validates conformity to design standards and specifications and identifies design errors and other deficiencies, and recommends changes.
- Provides documentation, identifies design issues, and makes technical design presentations to engineering staff as required.
- Remains current in CAD techniques and any applicable state‑of‑the‑art engineering design software applications.
- Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
- Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Other duties as assigned or required. - We operate on a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off.
- Typically requires an Associate's degree or a certificate from a recognized organization indicating completion of training in Pro Engineer, CATIA or IDEAS design software plus ten or more years of progressive experience utilizing CAD software with at least two of those years spent utilizing Pro Engineer, CATIA or IDEAS engineering design software.
- Must have an understanding of engineering design concepts and principles, including ASME Y14.1, ASME Y14.2, ASME Y14.3, ASME Y14.5, and ASME Y14.34.
- Ability to understand new concepts quickly, applying them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
- Must have some working knowledge of GD&T.
- Must be able to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases.
- Must also be able to determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of difficult problems.
- Must have good communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, and excellent computer skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team and be able to work extended hours as required.
- Must be willing to work extended hours to meet deadlines and increase probability of project success.
- Must be customer focused and able to work on a self‑initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.

Salary range: 48,160 - 71,598
