We employ advanced computer-aided engineering tools in the areas of optics, structural, thermal, and coupled analyses. We couple our engineering analysis capabilities with design, prototype, integration and test capabilities to create solutions for our clients that are of extraordinary value.
AboutApplied Photonics Sector
Applied Photonics is a business unit within Quartus that focuses on the practical application of the science and technology of light. Our teams develop innovative products as well as custom optical and metrology solutions for commercial and industrial applications. Our expertise spans precision metrology, robotics, machine vision, semiconductor and emerging photonic technologies including quantum optics. Typical development cycles begin with defining customer objectives, progress through all stages of design and analysis, and conclude with hardware build and rigorous testing.
Our clients range from large, industry-leading organizations to agile startup-style companies. We pride ourselves on bridging diverse perspectives and delivering advanced technical systems that meet each program’s budget and schedule constraints.
Our multidisciplinary team—comprising optical, opto‑mechanical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers—works in a highly collaborative environment where communication and team ethics are paramount.
What will you do?As an Electrical CAD Designer, you will own schematic capture, cabling drawings, panel documentation, and 2D mechanical drawing production across a wide range of engineering programs. Projects span from precision optical subassemblies with well‑defined interfaces to complete automation systems involving PLCs, electrical cabinets, and integrated PCs.
This is a Solid Works‑native role requiring the use of Solid Works Electrical Professional for 3D harness routing and 2D schematic/cabling documentation. On the mechanical side you will work within Solid Works to produce 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings from existing 3D models.
Essential Job Functions:Electrical Documentation
- Develop 2D schematics, wiring diagrams, wire lists, and harness/cable drawings in Solid Works Electrical Professional, linked to the 3D mechanical model
- Generate and maintain panel layouts for electrical cabinets including PLC I/O, power distribution, and PC/compute integration
- Translate system interface control documents (ICDs) into compliant cabling designs for optical and motion subassemblies where scope is bounded to motors, sensors, and signal/power interconnect
- Build and maintain component/connector libraries within Solid Works Electrical — pinouts, wire gauge, color coding, manufacturer part numbers
- Generate and synchronize BOMs directly from schematics through design revisions
- Produce 2D detail drawings, assembly drawings, and drawing packages from existing Solid Works models — fully dimensioned with GD&T, tolerances, notes, and title block per drawing standards
- Create exploded views, section cuts, presentation configurations, and documentation‑oriented model manipulations (part visibility, color states, simplified representations) to support assembly instructions, proposals, and customer deliverables
- Maintain drawing revision history and ensure drawing packages stay synchronized with model changes
- Coordinate with mechanical, optical, and controls engineers to resolve interface questions, routing conflicts, and panel space constraints
- Support design reviews and project milestone deliverables with complete, fabrication‑ready documentation packages
Position is based on site in San Diego.
What are we looking for?- Associate degree in electrical/CAD drafting, electrical engineering technology, or related field; equivalent combination of education and hands‑on Solid Works Electrical Professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 3+ years of relevant experience
- Experience with Solid Works CAD ecosystem, specifically:
