We are seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Mechanical Commissioning Specialist / Commissioning Agent to support commissioning projects for commercial, institutional, government, healthcare, mission-critical, and other building facilities.
This position is ideal for a Mechanical Engineer or commissioning professional with a strong understanding of HVAC and mechanical building systems who enjoys a combination of field work, technical troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and interaction with contractors and building owners.
Candidates with a Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA) or Certified Commissioning Specialist (CxS, formerly CxT) credential are preferred; however, certification is not required. We are open to developing a junior engineer with strong mechanical fundamentals and an interest in building commissioning.
Responsibilities- Support commissioning of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, and associated building control systems.
- Perform field inspections, equipment verification, and construction progress observations.
- Develop and execute pre-functional checklists and functional performance tests.
- Verify operation of equipment including air handling units, rooftop units, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, exhaust systems, and hydronic systems.
- Review HVAC sequences of operation and verify proper performance through the Building Automation System (BAS/DDC).
- Identify installation, controls, or operational deficiencies and document commissioning issues.
- Coordinate with mechanical contractors, controls contractors, TAB contractors, engineers, facility personnel, and project owners.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, controls documentation, and TAB reports.
- Assist with commissioning plans, test procedures, issue logs, site reports, and final commissioning reports.
- Participate in equipment startup, system testing, troubleshooting, and project turnover activities.
- Verify that installed systems operate in accordance with the design intent, Owner's Project Requirements, and Basis of Design.
- Assist with existing building commissioning, retro-commissioning, and energy optimization projects as needed.
- Maintain accurate project documentation using commissioning software such as CxAlloy.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Systems Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
- Approximately 1–5+ years of experience in HVAC engineering, commissioning, mechanical construction, building automation, facilities engineering, or a related field.
- Strong fundamental understanding of commercial HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, control diagrams, and sequences of operation.
- Understanding of HVAC controls and Building Automation Systems is highly desirable.
- Comfortable working in the field around operating mechanical equipment and active construction sites.
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with owners, engineers, contractors, and facility personnel.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- CxA or CxS certification through AABC Commissioning Group (ACG).
- Previous experience performing building commissioning or functional performance testing.
- Experience with BAS/DDC systems such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, Trane, Honeywell, Automated Logic, Distech, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with CxAlloy or other commissioning management software.
- Knowledge of ASHRAE commissioning practices, LEED commissioning, CALGreen, or building energy codes.
- EIT or PE license is a plus but not required.
