Job Description

Atlas is seeking a Geophysicist II to join our Geophysics team in San Diego, California. In this role, you will analyze geophysical evaluations to measure soil and rock properties—including seismic and shear wave velocities, electrical resistivity, conductivity, gravity, magnetics, and other subsurface characteristics—using non-destructive methods from the ground surface and within boreholes.

You will review, compile, and interpret geophysical data to map subsurface conditions that support environmental investigations, geotechnical engineering projects, groundwater resource exploration, natural resource exploration, and infrastructure development. The insights you provide will help clients better understand site conditions, reduce uncertainty, and make informed engineering and construction decisions.

Working alongside experienced geophysicists and multidisciplinary project teams, you will contribute to field investigations, data analysis, reporting, and technical recommendations. You will prepare geophysical service reports that help mitigate project risk by providing valuable insight into subsurface conditions, engineering parameters, and resource-targeting activities that influence future project design and development. Safety, quality, and technical excellence are central to the work we do and the value we deliver to our clients and communities.

Core

Responsibilities
  • Support the planning, preparation, and execution of geophysical investigations in collaboration with geophysicists and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Conduct field studies and geophysical data acquisition using techniques that measure subsurface and structural properties, including seismic velocities, electrical resistivity, electrical conductivity, magnetics, electromagnetics, gravity, and related methods.
  • Manage and document field data with accuracy and attention to detail, evaluate data quality in real time, and perform field and post-processing quality control activities.
  • Review, interpret, and compile geophysical data to support the mapping of subsurface conditions for environmental, geotechnical, groundwater, resource exploration, and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare client-ready deliverables, including maps, figures, charts, tables, and technical reports that communicate findings and help inform project planning and design decisions.
  • Follow Atlas safety standards, geophysical procedures, and regulatory requirements while demonstrating integrity, initiative, continuous learning, and a commitment to technical excellence.
You’ll thrive here if you have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geophysics, Geology, Earth Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Approximately 1–2 years of geophysics, geology, engineering, or related technical experience.
  • Knowledge of geophysical data collection and interpretation principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality documentation.
  • Effective problem-solving, communication, and digital literacy skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and perform field-based work, including work conducted outdoors in varying site conditions.
  • Interest in continuous learning and professional growth within the geophysics field.
