HAZMAT Technician

The HAZMAT Technician is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local county and Navy environmental regulations related to hazardous material (HAZMAT) and hazardous waste (HAZWASTE). This position helps protect personnel, the community and the environment by ensuring the proper handling, storage, collection, transportation preparation and disposal of hazardous material and waste.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all Federal, State, Local, County, and Navy environmental laws, policies and regulations.
  • Assist in establishing guidelines to protect the health and safety of employees and the community by minimizing/eliminating the risk of environmental pollution.
  • Act as the liaison between the government and the workforce for HAZMAT issues.
  • Serve as AVMAC's point of contact for collection of workforce generated HAZWASTE, preparation for shipping (i.e. palletizing etc.), preparation of all supporting paper for the disposal of workforce generated HAZWASTE in support of the Daily Flight Schedule.
  • Specific to VMFA-323/FRD and MAG-11, ensure all contractor/military/government HAZMAT/HAZWASTE generated, to include any and all squadron sponsored taskings, squadron aircraft SE, and related maintenance actions are properly handled, collected, and disposed of per all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Qualifications, Knowledge and

Skills Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least two years of experience shall include receiving, storage, distribution and handling, and disposal of all types of material that may be utilized at the worksite.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Understanding of safety and occupational health management principles and experience supporting or administering safety programs.
  • Ability to coordinate with all various groups and divisions to support the HAZMAT compliance efforts.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary clearance and base access.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, move, and palletize hazardous materials and hazardous waste containers.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb for extended periods while inspecting, collecting, and storing materials.
  • Work in industrial, hangar, flight line, and warehouse environments.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, respirators (if required), protective clothing, and safety footwear.
  • This position requires the ability material-handling equipment as needed for transporting hazardous materials and waste.
  • Ability to read labels, safety documentation, shipping papers, and regulatory guidance.
  • Sufficient physical stamina to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around aircraft maintenance operations.

Pay Rate for this position is $51.42 with additional Health and Welfare which is determined by the contract requirements and/or the union CBA.
