Position: Tax Manager, Corporate/ASC 740

Overview

The Core Tax Services (CTS) Manager – ASC
740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying methods of complying with tax regulations, and serving as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 issues. This role applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues and communicates potential risks and potential changes in tax policy.

Responsibilities
  • Tax Compliance:
    Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Conduct top-level review of tax return/thorough review and resolve tax issues with the client; involve specialists where appropriate. Communicate issues identified in tax accrual reviews with Assurance clients. Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement progress versus budget, timely billing and collection of receivables.

    Manage client relationships and expectations; provide timely advice to clients.
  • Research:
    Identify when research is needed; frame issues for research clearly; report analysis concisely. Identify complex issues for engagement teams and provide research methodology. Train managers/staff on research skills and ASC 740 issues; involve firm specialists as appropriate.
  • ASC 740 Tax Accruals:
    Apply Firm policies and TQM regarding ASC 740; explain income tax provision components and uncertain tax positions to clients; plan tax accrual reviews with Assurance (budget, scope, delivery dates); review tax provisions and work papers; utilize Specialized Tax Services as needed.
  • Tax Consulting:
    Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes. Assess applicability of CTS and STS consulting for each client; organize STS support on projects; serve as a technical resource; ensure compliance with Written Tax Advice; assist with exam support; frame projects and issues for delegation to seniors and associates.
  • Tax Specialization:
    Develop in-depth understanding of technical issues in taxation areas; may organize internal CPE training; may train/mentor managers, seniors, and associates on ASC 740.
  • Strategy Development:
    Propose new ideas to improve client position, reduce taxes/expenses, or provide non-tax benefits; contribute to improvements on previous work; may lead marketing campaigns; present complex strategies to clients; collaborate with National Tax and STS to deliver high-quality analyses on ASC 740.
  • Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise Associates and Senior Associates on all projects; review work and provide comments; train staff on software tools; act as Career Advisor; schedule and manage workload; provide verbal and written performance feedback to Associates and Senior Associates.
Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Taxation (required);
    Masters degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).
  • Five (5) or more years of prior experience (required); experience in managing ASC
    740 computations for privately held and publicly traded clients (required); supervisory experience (required); multinational client experience (preferred).
  • CPA, Attorney (admitted in US), or Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) (required).
  • Software: proficiency with Microsoft Office tools; experience with tax research databases (BNA, RIA) and tax work papers software (Go File Room , GoSystem

    RS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software) or equivalents (preferred).
  • Other skills: strong verbal/written communication, delegation, analytical/research/decision-making, teamwork, leadership of tax professionals, ability to provide tax advice and maintain client relationships; executive presence for client contact.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary ranges and benefit information are provided as part of the candidate offer and may vary by geography. California Range: $102,300 - $150,000;
