About the Position

This position is located at Naval Medical Center San Diego within the Directorate of Clinical Support (Occupational Medicine).

• Provides nursing assessment, diagnosis and treatment, nursing care and screening of occupational injuries, illnesses, pre-placement, periodic and termination exams along with fitness for duty exams.
• Initiates appropriate laboratory, x-ray or other screening tests based on history indicating past or present exposures and other information from the employee relating to work practices of potentially hazardous exposures.
• Performs work site visits to evaluate health hazards, work practices, and the utilization of appropriate safety, and protective equipment.
• Maintains statistical data for use in epidemiology studies, risk assessments of work sites, and other areas of concern.
• Tracks employees with occupational medical conditions, reviewing medical care and treatment relating to the employee’s ability to return to full or limited duty, and employees who require work accommodation.
• Provides individual and group worker education and training on specific hazards and substances in compliance with the Federal Hazard Communication Standard.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
• Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements.
• This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• The Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) and/or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) professional certifications are desired for this position.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
