Are you interested in harnessing technology and AI to transform healthcare?

At XiFin, we believe a healthier, more efficient healthcare system starts with strong financial and operational foundations. Our innovative technologies help diagnostic providers, laboratories, and healthcare systems manage complexity, drive better outcomes, and stay focused on what matters most: patient care.

On of the ways we are achieving this is through our XiFin Internship Program. The Internship Program is designed to empower, educate, and inspire the next generation of talent by providing meaningful hands‑on experience, professional development, and direct exposure to the real impact of our work. Our mission is to create an environment where interns build the skills, confidence, and connections needed to excel in their careers-while contributing to projects that support XiFin's mission of improving healthcare financial performance.

This is a 10-week structured program beginning on June 15, 2026, and ending August 21, 2026. This will be part-time (up to 29 hours/week) with the potential to go full-time in the future.

About the role:

The Machine Learning (ML) Engineer Intern will support the design, development, validation, and deployment of machine learning solutions that enhance automation and decision‑making within XiFin's healthcare revenue cycle workflows. This role provides hands‑on experience working with real‑world AI systems, including predictive modeling, natural language processing (NLP), model explainability, and production‑level ML integration.

Working alongside experienced ML engineers and data scientists, the intern will contribute to high‑value use cases such as prior authorization prediction, denial classification, appeals automation, and AI‑driven workflow optimization. Responsibilities may include preparing and transforming datasets, evaluating model performance, testing model outputs, and supporting the operationalization of ML capabilities within enterprise systems.

The ideal candidate is curious, detail‑oriented, and eager to learn how data engineering powers business intelligence and AI‑driven decision‑making.

This role offers valuable experience for those interested in building a career in data engineering or data infrastructure.

What does the position pay?

The hourly compensation for this role is $23.00 for undergraduate students and $25.00 for graduate students.

How you will make an impact:

In this role, you'll:

* Extract, clean, and preprocess structured and unstructured healthcare data.

* Engineer features and validate datasets for downstream ML tasks.

* Develop and evaluate machine learning models (e.g., classification, regression, NLP).

* Conduct cross‑validation, hyperparameter tuning, and performance benchmarking.

* Perform model explainability analysis using SHAP or similar tools.

* Investigate misclassifications, edge cases, and potential data confounders.

* Assist with model containerization and API integration (FastAPI / REST).

* Support deployment workflows in AWS or Azure cloud environments.

* Implement logging, monitoring, and performance evaluation processes.

* Document technical findings and present insights to technical and business stakeholders.

This is an onsite position at our office in San Diego, CA.

What you will bring to the team:

A combination of the following education and experience factors will be considered:
