Technology Support Specialist I

San Diego State University is looking for a customer-focused and technically curious Technology Support Specialist I to support the university's technology-enabled learning environments. In this role, you'll provide frontline technical support for classroom and audiovisual technologies, assist with the installation and maintenance of instructional systems, and help ensure reliable technology experiences for faculty, staff, and students. Working as part of the Learning Environments team, you'll contribute to innovative teaching and learning spaces across campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • User Support & Technology Services
    • Provide technical support and consultation for faculty, staff, and students to resolve technology issues and optimize system performance.
    • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and audiovisual technologies in classrooms and other instructional spaces.
    • Deliver user training and develop support materials that help maximize technology adoption and effectiveness.
    • Respond to technology requests promptly while maintaining a high level of customer service.
  • Learning Environment & Classroom Support
    • Support the operation and maintenance of classrooms, labs, conference rooms, and other technology-enabled spaces.
    • Configure systems to meet instructional needs while ensuring reliable performance and connectivity.
    • Perform preventative maintenance and assist with equipment upgrades and technology refreshes.
    • Help maintain secure, functional, and accessible instructional environments.
  • Systems Integration & AV Technology
    • Install, configure, and test audiovisual equipment, including displays, cameras, microphones, video capture appliances, and control systems.
    • Assist with Classroom and active learning environment projects, including hardware installation and system integration.
    • Support classroom streaming, special events, and instructional technology initiatives.
    • Research emerging instructional technologies and contribute to innovative learning environments.
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
    • Collaborate with IT colleagues, faculty, and campus partners to support instructional technology initiatives.
    • Assist with preparing documentation, cost estimates, and technical recommendations for classroom technology projects.
    • Contribute to ongoing improvements in technology services and learning environment operations.

Position Information

  • Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • Position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Work hours are Monday - Thursday 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm and Friday 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field. Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • General knowledge of information technology systems, applications, and networks.
  • General knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting and related technology support practices.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to work with students, faculty, and staff to obtain pertinent information, communicate technical information to diverse audiences, and document issues and resolutions.
  • Computer skills to appropriately respond to IT complaints and issues.
  • Preferred:
