Position Overview
The Material Specialist provides critical material logistics, supply chain coordination, and material readiness support to Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) in support of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (CVNs). This role directly supports aircraft carrier readiness across all phases of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP) by ensuring timely identification, procurement, tracking, expediting, and accountability of material required for maintenance, modernization, and repair activities.
The Material Specialist works closely with ship’s force, TYCOM staffs, Maintenance Support Centers (MSC), Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) teams, and other readiness stakeholders to sustain mission-capable aircraft carriers.
- Provide material logistics support in alignment with CNAF CVN Readiness Operations Center (ROC) objectives, supporting readiness, maintenance, modernization, and lifecycle sustainment activities.
- Identify, research, process, expedite, track, and reconcile material requisitions in support of Ship’s Force Work Packages (SFWP), TYCOM-directed initiatives, and aircraft carrier maintenance and repair efforts.
- Utilize the Naval Supply System to conduct detailed material research, including identification by part number, piece number, National Stock Number (NSN), noun name, and control number.
- Track material status from requisition through receipt, ensuring visibility of material readiness metrics that support fleet-level decision making.
- Coordinate with supply activities, warehouses, shipboard personnel, and maintenance planners to resolve material shortages, delays, and discrepancies impacting readiness.
- Assist with inventory management, excess material identification, warehousing coordination, and material disposition in accordance with Navy logistics policies.
- Support Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) and Configuration Data Management (CDM) efforts by ensuring material data accuracy and alignment with ship configuration and maintenance requirements.
- Maintain and update material-related databases and automated logistics systems to ensure accuracy, traceability, and auditability.
- Support maintenance planning and execution by providing timely material availability data for availability work packages (AWP), modernization packages, and Ship Change Documents (SCDs).
- Assist readiness assessments by providing material readiness inputs that support logistics, supply, and overall mission capability reporting.
- Interface with government stakeholders to support continuous improvement of material processes, supply chain efficiency, and readiness outcomes.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience serving as a Material Specialist or in a closely related logistics or supply support role.
- Demonstrated experience working with the Naval Supply System, including material research, requisition processing, and expediting.
- Proficiency using automated logistics and research tools to identify and track material by piece number, part number, and National Stock Number (NSN).
- Experience supporting Navy shipboard or shore-based maintenance, logistics, or readiness operations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple material actions simultaneously in a high-tempo operational environment.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to coordinate with ship’s force, supply activities, and senior Navy stakeholders.
- Experience supporting aircraft carrier (CVN) maintenance, modernization, or readiness programs.
- Familiarity with Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Maintenance Support Centers (MSC), and shipboard logistics systems.
- Knowledge of Navy readiness reporting concepts and logistics metrics.
- Services are performed at government facilities, onboard aircraft carriers, and at designated CNAF support locations.
