Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Summary
You will serve as a PIPEFITTER LEADER in the DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Trident Refit Facility Bangor, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Applicants will only be considered for positions within their own UIC (e.g., 4523A).
Open dates: 10/14/2025 – 10/13/2026.
Salary: $30.11 to $50.37 per hour (pay scale WL 10). Locations include Washington, California, Maine, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
- Follow instructions received from supervisors and initiate work.
Work with colleagues to set pace. - Ensure plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available and obtain needed stock from supply locations.
- Maintain current knowledge and answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies and directives.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be deemed suitable for federal employment;
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees must pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Within DoD, appointment of retired military members within 180 days after retirement is subject to U.S.C. 3326.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must register for Selective Service.
- May be required to complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
- Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to duty assignment.
- Will wear personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during the shift.
- May work in areas with harmful physical and chemical agents; may participate in medical surveillance programs.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays; overtime or night differential pay may apply.
- Testing may be required; a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) is mandatory for eligible candidates.
Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience rather than the length of time. Applicants must demonstrate:
- Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
- Ability to lead or supervise.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and related processes.
- Measurement, layout, and technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
- Troubleshooting proficiency.
