Class Outside Machinist - SDCA

Overview

Overall purpose of the job: to work within a team of Outside Machinists to achieve minimum production time, standards, and quality in keeping with company policies, while maintaining a positive and motivated team environment. Reports to Production Supervision.

• Install equipment on board vessels in a safe and productive manner.
• Disassemble, fault find, repair and re-assemble shipboard equipment as directed by the supervisor.
• Mark and measure to close tolerances using Austal calibrated equipment.
• Safely rig equipment following all OSHA requirements.
• Inspect work, identify potential problems, and initiate corrective actions.
• Increase awareness of Quality procedures within the department.
• Ensure adherence to correct work procedures.
• Continuously improve communications and flexibility within the team.
• Develop other team members’ skill levels.
• Build pride of workmanship and quality through on‑the‑job training.
• Contribute toward innovation and productivity improvements.
• Assist in the control of waste elimination (materials, consumables, etc.).
• Assist the supervisor to maintain control of department equipment and its maintenance.
• Work toward the team goal of delivering the vessel on time.
• Follow Austal guidelines and procedures.
• Ensure the work area is left clean; all equipment and tools are stowed away safely and protected against damage.
• Perform work in compliance with NAVSEA STD items.
• Availability to travel to off-site work locations.
• Follow Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy (SUP
  270).

• Comparable trade experience defined as 5+ years in the applicable trade, or 2 years in shipbuilding, or education comparable to an apprenticeship, or at least 1 year as a B-class Outside Machinist at Austal.
• Knowledge of shaft alignment techniques, including laser alignment systems and dial indicator alignment.
• Working knowledge of machining procedures and strong mechanical aptitude.
• Knowledge of ship terminology; ability to interpret engineering drawings.
• Ability to safely operate all fixed and non-fixed machinery; set up machinery to meet flatness tolerance requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret job specifications; perform work on marine vessels; follow directions with limited supervision.
• Proficiency in basic math and measurements using the metric system; ability to perform simple written communications.
• Proven problem-solving abilities; travel to off-site locations as needed.
• Compliance with Austal Off-Site Temporary Assignment Policy (SUP
  270).

• Must have a full set of personal tools.

• Supervisors, Production Manager, PDSS, Leadership, Safety personnel.

• Employment eligibility guidelines: 18+, proof of US Person Status, no felony convictions as specified, willingness to undergo drug screen and background check.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required clearances as necessary for the role.

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform essential functions. Must be able to tour vessels and work sites; regularly stand, walk, manipulate objects, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and communicate. Occasional sitting. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 75 lbs on an occasional basis and up to 20 lbs frequently. Ability to climb stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps;

work at heights above 12 feet; work in confined spaces; use PPE as required. Ability to work in varying temperatures and handle tools and equipment safely.

Regular exposure to humid conditions, bright lights, moving mechanical parts, high places, outdoor weather, and loud noise; occasional exposure to fumes, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.

Pay rate: $42.75 per hour.
