Job Description

The Assembler builds and validates precision opto-mechanical assemblies in strict accordance with established procedures. This role involves working with standardized tools and equipment, performing mechanical assembly and basic inspections, entering production data into company systems, and preparing completed assemblies for shipment. The Assembler collaborates closely with engineers and peers to support special builds and experiments, helps identify and document material discrepancies, and contributes to continuous improvement of assembly procedures and quality processes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and validate precision opto-mechanical assemblies strictly following written procedures and Bills of Material.
  • Use standardized tools and electric equipment such as torque wrenches, electric and pneumatic screwdrivers, and ball drivers to perform mechanical assembly tasks.
  • Perform mechanical assembly work on opto-mechanical modules in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Enter accurate and complete production and test data into company databases and other electronic systems.
  • Execute simple, standardized process inspections and tests throughout the production process to verify product quality and performance.
  • Interface with engineers to support special builds, prototypes, and experiments based on detailed instructions.
  • Collaborate with peers and supervisors to resolve assembly and process problems, adjusting approach depending on the level and complexity of the issue.
  • Operate precision cleaning machinery to ensure components and assemblies meet cleanliness requirements.
  • Prepare completed assemblies for shipment, including final checks and proper packaging.
  • Recommend procedural and process improvements to management to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
  • Follow established control measures and quality processes to ensure modules meet defined specifications and standards.
  • Identify and document discrepant material, including recording nonconformances and communicating issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly procedures, and related documentation to perform work correctly.
  • Use electric and pneumatic tools safely and effectively in a clean, organized work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production, testing, and continuous improvement activities.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to build and validate precision opto-mechanical assemblies following detailed written procedures and Bills of Material.
  • Proficiency in using standardized mechanical tools and equipment, including torque wrenches, electric screwdrivers, pneumatic screwdrivers, ball drivers, and related assembly tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter data accurately into company databases and electronic systems.
  • Ability to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic email systems for documentation and communication.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting issues and interacting with engineers, peers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate and statistically analyze data and effectively report problems using written and/or graphical formats.
  • Capability to follow written assembly procedures consistently and adhere to established quality and process controls.
  • Ability to detect visible defects in material under normal lighting with 20/20 vision or corrected to 20/20 vision.
  • Comfort working under deadlines and managing tasks to meet production schedules.
  • Ability to move, lift, and handle components and assemblies, including occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to observe and respond appropriately to people and situations encountered in the course of work.
  • Capacity to learn and apply new information or skills as processes, tools, and products evolve.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with electro-optical and/or opto-mechanical systems is desired.
  • Experience with environmental testing of assemblies or components is preferred.
