Manufacturing Engineer – CNC Machining & Process Engineering
5th Axis is growing, and we are looking for an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to support our advanced CNC machining and manufacturing operations in San Diego.
5th Axis is a leader in automated manufacturing, CNC machining, and work holding technology. We provide turnkey manufacturing solutions spanning product development, milling, turning, assembly, plating, finishing, automation, and logistics.
This is a hands-on manufacturing engineering role for someone who understands CNC machining, tooling, fixturing, manufacturing processes, ERP/MRP systems, and the realities of supporting a production machine shop.

What You'll Do
As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will help develop, improve, and control manufacturing processes from planning through production. You will work closely with Manufacturing, CNC Programming, Planning, Scheduling, Quality, and Purchasing to keep jobs moving efficiently through the shop.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design new and improve existing manufacturing processes, methods, tooling, fixturing, automation, and work instructions
- Review engineering drawings and technical documentation and develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), routings, and Methods of Manufacturing
- Plan and establish manufacturing routes for components and assemblies through CNC machining and related operations
- Create and maintain manufacturing information within the ERP/MRP system
- Coordinate with CNC Programming to ensure programs and manufacturing processes are optimized for production
- Coordinate tooling and material readiness with Programming, Planning, Purchasing, and Production
- Schedule and expedite jobs through manufacturing processes to meet production requirements
- Identify and resolve manufacturing bottlenecks, quality issues, and production constraints
- Support the disposition and resolution of nonconforming material
- Develop and coordinate outside processing suppliers in partnership with Purchasing and Quality
- Prepare manufacturing documentation, including SPC sheets, in-process drawings, work instructions, and process documentation
- Apply Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and other continuous-improvement methodologies
- Lead projects focused on reducing lead times and manufacturing costs while improving process control, quality, and yield
- Apply statistical methods and manufacturing data to establish production standards and improve manufacturing performance
- Provide hands-on engineering support to the shop floor and help resolve day-to-day production issues
What We're Looking For Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, OR 7+ years of relevant manufacturing experience
- 5+ years of manufacturing experience in a production environment
- Strong working knowledge of CNC machining and machine shop operations
- Demonstrated knowledge of CNC manufacturing processes, including machining, part programming, tooling, and fixturing
- Experience developing or improving manufacturing processes, routings, work instructions, and production methods
- Experience with CAD software such as Solid Works
- Experience working with ERP/MRP systems
- Working knowledge of quality control methods, inspection requirements, and nonconformance resolution
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally and directly with the shop floor to resolve manufacturing and production issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a precision CNC machining, aerospace, defense, medical device, or advanced manufacturing environment
- Experience with Epicor ERP
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or similar continuous-improvement methodologies
- Knowledge of machining materials, cutting tools, plating, finishing, and outside processing
