ABOUTTHE ROLE
Contextual Note:
Under Our Time To Act’s commitment to housing justice, there are three teams:
Eliminating Exclusionary Zoning, Enacting Social Housing, and Ending Youth Homelessness. The teams focused on Eliminating Exclusionary Zoning and Enacting Social Housing will primarily utilize grassroots organizing, while the Ending Youth Homelessness team will focus on research and advocacy, with opportunities to learn additional skills. Job Summary:Housing Justice Team Members will develop skills in organizing, mobilizing, and advocating for housing justice through peer learning and leadership opportunities. Responsibilities include educational campaigns, direct actions, and supporting research and advocacy efforts.
Key activities include:
- Attending weekly meetings with your team and the Team Director.
- Participating in full-team monthly meetings.
- Engaging in additional meetings and events as required.
- Researching topics related to housing, transportation, and land-use policy.
- Co-creating educational materials, campaigns, and direct actions.
- Planning and executing community events and mobilizations.
- Communicating effectively and completing tasks timely.
- Contributing authentically and passionately to the team and mission.
Expected commitment is approximately 10 hours per week, mostly flexible, with some weekends and increased hours during campaigns.
Pay Rate:This position is voluntary with no monetary compensation. Benefits include tailored experience, training, mentorship, letters of recommendation, and a supportive community.
DesiredStart Date:
As soon as possible, with priority for those able to start before January 15th, 2025.
REQUIREMENTSRequired Qualifications:
- Youth aged 15-24.
- Familiarity with Google Drive applications.
- Basic knowledge of Slack.
- Attention to detail and deadlines.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team and be adaptable.
- Confidentiality.
- Willingness to attend in-person events; some meetings via Zoom.
Preferred Qualifications:
Not required but helpful:
- Grassroots organizing, research, lobbying, advocacy experience.
- Knowledge of housing, transportation, land use policies.
- Experience with coalition building, public comments, writing styles, media communication, volunteer coordination, feedback provision, lived experience with housing insecurity.
Work Modality & Location:
In-person, occasionally hybrid, events across San Diego.
