DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, which is a prestigious recognition that applies to only 10% of all U.S. hospitals. Magnet is the “gold standard” for nursing excellence and is based on strengths in five key areas, which include transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovation and improvements and empirical outcomes. UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011.

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the day‑to‑day operations of Interventional Radiology at an assigned primary site (La Jolla, Hillcrest, or East Campus), with the expectation of providing cross‑coverage at other IR sites as operational needs require. Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager supports safe, high‑quality patient care while upholding professional nursing standards in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics.

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the day‑to‑day operations of East Campus Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab, Vascular Access, and Imaging Nursing. Under the general supervision of the IR Nurse Manager, and with a dotted‑line relationship to East Campus on‑site leadership, the Assistant Nurse Manager supports safe, high‑quality patient care while maintaining strong operational and interdisciplinary partnerships across the campus.

This role supports pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedural nursing teams and is structured with an expectation of approximately 60% clinical practice and 40% administrative responsibilities, based on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily clinical and operational workflows across IR, Cath Lab, Vascular Access, and Imaging Nursing.
  • Provide direct clinical care in IR and Cath Lab settings as needed, supporting pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedural patient care.
  • Support daily staffing operations, including real‑time staffing adjustments, resource allocation, and workload balancing across multiple nursing teams.
  • Review and approve timecards, assist with schedule oversight, and support staffing coverage needs.
  • Serve as an on‑site leadership presence, managing patient and staff escalations, including patient service recovery and workflow disruptions.
  • Actively coach and support staff through real‑time feedback, performance support, and reinforcement of policies, procedures, and professional practice standards.
  • Assist with staff meetings, staff engagement initiatives, and fostering a collaborative, accountable culture focused on quality and teamwork.
  • Support on‑site regulatory compliance and readiness, including adherence to institutional policies, accreditation standards, and campus‑specific workflows.
  • Identify operational and clinical process gaps and assist with corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in recruitment and hiring, including interviews, onboarding, and orientation of nursing staff.
  • Perform administrative responsibilities aligned with the 40% administrative expectation, while maintaining clinical credibility and visibility.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary partners—including PACU, anesthesia, the operating room, pharmacy, inpatient units, and East Campus leadership—to support coordinated care delivery, patient throughput, and a positive patient and staff experience.
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with East Campus on‑site leadership through regular communication, coordination, and alignment with campus priorities.
