Overview of JobThe Registered Nurse (RN) supervises and coordinates the efforts of nursing staff and provides total nursing care for residents. This direct resident care role requires compliance with California Code of Regulation Title 22 and the State Health and Safety Code.
Duties and Responsibilities- Manage area of responsibility to achieve and maintain the highest quality of care.
- Monitor employees to ensure overtime is not utilized without prior approval.
- Contact physicians as necessary to ensure timely and appropriate interventions.
- Supervise nursing unit, including scheduling and directing staff to the extent permitted by the state practice act.
- Monitor employee meals and 10‑minute breaks to assure compliance.
- Monitor food carts to ensure meals are served in a timely manner.
- Coordinate effective use of personnel, supplies, equipment, and facilities.
- Monitor nursing care for residents throughout the shift.
- Recommend purchase of materials or equipment to improve nursing services.
- Monitor noise level on the unit to keep it minimal.
- Participate in the nurse on‑call system.
- Review staffing patterns and census of nursing units; reassign personnel when necessary to meet resident needs and budgetary controls.
- Obtain medications, supplies, and medical records needed for safe, efficient, and therapeutic care.
- Ensure monthly order recapitulation is completed accurately for the assigned unit/area.
- Monitor skills of new staff; guide and observe staff needing additional assistance with procedures.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate programs that promote recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of nursing staff.
- Complete capitulation summary for discharged residents within five days of discharge.
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff members, LVNs, and CNAs.
- Assign nursing care to team members based on resident needs and individual capabilities and qualifications.
- Evaluate data and compare courses of action when assigning team members.
- Conduct or participate in performance evaluations of CNAs under supervision.
- Direct nursing staff to the extent permitted by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Meet with unit personnel throughout shift to identify and correct problem areas; provide shift reports at the beginning and end of the shift.
- Coordinate nursing care when residents are scheduled for therapy or procedures by other departments.
- Interview applicants and recommend hires.
- Ensure nursing personnel follow established procedures and company policies.
- Correct, coach, and counsel underperforming personnel.
- Participate in counseling, disciplinary action, and termination procedures to the extent permitted by the Nursing Practice Act.
- Investigate accidents and unusual occurrences; report findings to the Director of Nursing Services (DNS).
- Investigate complaints and grievances; report findings to DNS.
- Keep DNS informed of resident, staff, and related matters status.
- Promote interpersonal relationships and develop staff morale.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in residents.
- Take overall authority and responsibility for directing services on the assigned unit/shift.
- Account for performance of tasks by LVNs and CNAs under RN supervision.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date medical records, including nursing assessments, care plans, and progress notes.
- Document interventions, observations, and resident responses to treatment.
- Conduct weekly chart audit for all patients assigned to the unit (all assessments, MARs, flow sheets, and treatment sheets).
