Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (MS RN) – VA Medical Center

Location: San Diego, CA

Reports To: Nurse Manager / Charge Nurse

Job Overview

We are seeking skilled and dependable Medical-Surgical Registered Nurses (MS RNs) to provide high-quality patient care within the VA Medical Center in San Diego. This role involves caring for adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions, ensuring safe, effective treatment and recovery. The MS RN will collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to deliver patient-centered care to the veteran population.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in a medical-surgical setting
  • Monitor patient condition, including vital signs, symptoms, and response to treatment
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and facility protocols
  • Perform patient assessments and document findings accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, and discharge planning
  • Collaborate with physicians, LVNs, CNAs, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care
  • Respond to changes in patient condition and elevate care as needed
  • Maintain infection control standards and ensure a safe patient environment
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and VA regulations
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (ADN or BSN)
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current BLS certification (American Heart Association preferred)
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in a medical-surgical or acute care setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience in a hospital-based medical-surgical unit
  • ACLS certification
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Experience working with diverse or veteran patient populations
