Assistant Nurse Manager (ANII) for the UCSDH Hillcrest Emergency Department (ED) supports operational, clinical, and administrative oversight of a high-acuity, Academic Medical Center, Comprehensive Level of Care, Geriatric care‑accredited Emergency Department serving as a Base station and integral component of the Level I Trauma Program, Burn Care Program, and multiple specialty programs. The ANII provides leadership to ensure the delivery of safe, evidence‑based, patient‑ and family‑centered care to a diverse acute and complex population.

Key Responsibilities Leadership and Operations
  • Assists in managing day‑to‑day operations of the emergency and emergency inpatient populations, including staffing, throughput, patient flow, and resource utilization.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to maintain compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and institutional standards (e.g., Joint Commission, Title 22, EMTALA, CMS, and Comprehensive Emergency Department requirements).
  • Participates in departmental strategic planning, policy development, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and administrative designee.
  • Promotes teamwork, effective communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the ED, ED Inpatient, Base Hospital Operations partners, and across inpatient units.
Clinical Practice and Quality
  • Ensures consistent delivery of high‑quality comprehensive patient care aligned with evidence‑based practice and organizational standards.
  • Responsible for operational metrics such as LWBS (left without being seen), APOT (ambulance patient offload times), door‑to‑provider times, and disposition to exit.
  • Actively involved in quality assurance and quality improvement for patient care metrics such as patient experience, Stroke, SEPSIS, STEMI, Resuscitation, and disaster preparedness.
  • Continuously improving employee experience, professional development, and advancement.
  • Utilizes LEAN management techniques in improvement projects, root cause analyses, and performance evaluations related to patient safety events.
Education and Professional Development
  • Mentors and coaches nursing staff to promote clinical competence, critical thinking, and clinical advancement.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Educator and academic partners to support student placements, orientation, and continuing education.
  • Encourages and models lifelong learning and participation in shared governance.
Human Resources and Fiscal Management
  • Assists with staff scheduling, timekeeping, recruitment, retention, and performance evaluations.
  • Participates in budget planning and monitors expenditures to ensure cost‑effective operations.
  • Promotes staff engagement, recognition, and a positive work environment.
Emergency Preparedness and Base Station Operations
  • Supports base station communication activities and ensures staff competency in EMS coordination, pre‑hospital communication, and disaster response.
  • Collaborates with EMS agencies, trauma services, and other departments to maintain readiness for mass casualty and surge events.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.
  • BSN required. Will consider candidates who are currently enrolled in a BSN or higher nursing degree program with a commitment to complete within the first two years of appointment.
  • Two (2+) or more years of acute care RN experience; one (1) year in either the ED or ED inpatient unit.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • PALS Certification.
  • MICN licensure or commitment to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Critical Clinical Care or Nurse Leader Certification or commitment to complete within six (6) months of hire (e.g., CEN, CPEN, CCRN, NE-BC, NLC).
  • Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services.
