Position Summary

National University’s School of Health Professions, Part-Time Nursing Lab Instructor provides a safe, structured, and controlled environment in which students can develop and practice essential nursing skills prior to delivering care to live patients. These experiential learning opportunities promote critical thinking, clinical judgement, psychomotor skill development, and professional communication while reinforcing theoretical concepts introduced in didactic coursework. The Nursing Lab Instructor plays a key role in facilitating hands-on learning activities that allow students to understand, perform, and progressively refine professional nursing competencies appropriate to their level within the program.

Essential Functions
  • Instructing and evaluating foundational nursing skills in the skills lab.
  • Facilitating and participating as standardized patients in simulation scenarios.
  • Supporting simulation setup and debriefing as needed.
  • Maintaining skills lab equipment and learning environment.
  • Reinforcing competency-based skill development and safety practices.
  • Aligning teaching to approved content to help prepare the student to be practice ready.
  • Provides instruction and remedial clinical lab and simulation activities.
  • Assists students in all clinical lab and simulation activities.
  • Prepares equipment, supplies and physical set-up and break-down for clinical lab and simulation activities with students.
  • Schedules and maintains open-lab hours for nursing students at the direction of the Senior Manager, Clinical Skills Lab.
  • Assists the Senior Manager, Clinical Skills Lab in conducting the inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies and assisting with the quality control of inventoried items.
  • Assists the Senior Manager, Clinical Skills Lab in identifying equipment needs, new and/or replacement, and supplies needed for students.
  • Maintains standards of operation and implementation of all clinical lab skills and simulation activities as outlined for each activity.
  • Promotes a learning environment that is non-discriminatory and that provides equity for all students.
  • Attend program meetings as required.

Requirements:
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required.
  • Active, unencumbered California RN license, required.
  • Minimum of 1 year sub-acute to acute care experience, required.
  • National University alumni are preferred.
  • Simulation and teaching experience, preferred.

Successful skills in coaching students in clinical application of nursing care. Working knowledge, principles, and practices of office management/systems within a higher education environment, preferred. Demonstrates an understanding of underlying organizational issues. Able to work autonomously and remain flexible with frequently changing priorities to meet student and school needs.
