Neonatal Nurse Practitioner – Per Diem

Provides primary and advanced nursing care to high‑risk neonates, education, and clinical research activities within the Pediatric Neonatology Program at UC San Diego Health.

Work Schedule: Rotating, 12‑hour shifts, Sunday–Saturday

Work Site: Hillcrest (primarily Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center)

Appointment Percent: 20%

Pay: $118.32 per hour (Hourly Equivalent)

Job Title: NURSE PRACT PD

• Provide primary care for high‑risk neonates from birth through discharge under the supervision of a neonatologist.
• Develop and implement educational programs for families and staff related to high‑risk neonatal care.
• Plan and present in‑service education and large‑group teaching sessions within the community and medical center.
• Write and implement policies and procedures for high‑risk neonatal care.
• Participate in and may initiate clinical research studies; identify potential clinical trial patients.
• Direct management of patient care for neonates by medical‑student interns and 4th‑year medical students, orienting and directing their care.
• Act as a liaison with other departments, community agencies, and consultants.
• Teach courses on neonatal care topics to students.
• Lead formal patient‑care conferences and rounds in the absence of the fellow or attending.
• Participate in external transports of critical newborns and lead resuscitation efforts during high‑risk deliveries.

• Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
• California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.
• NCC Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) certification.
• BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six (6) months of hire.
• NRP certification.
• Minimum two (2) years of recent work experience as a licensed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in a level III/IV facility, including experience attending high‑risk deliveries.
• Proven knowledge and skill in performing a comprehensive neonatal assessment and general medical examination, identifying medical problems, and formulating an appropriate plan of action; ability to see patients independently.
• Experience providing patient education and counseling, and developing and implementing long‑ and short‑range treatment plans. Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history, and acquiring pertinent data.
• Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.
• Knowledge of the names, abbreviations, and purposes of various diagnostic tests/procedures, including proper scheduling and completion of necessary requisitions and consents.
• Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for retrieval of patient data (PCIS/Epic preferred).
• Demonstrated experience working in a clinical research environment, capable of identifying potential clinical‑trial patients.
• Experience in research techniques, such as following a protocol and collecting all data precisely.
• Knowledge of study formats, with the ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; experience interacting positively, constructively, and effectively with staff, physicians, patients, and the general public.
• Experience performing effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload and frequent interruptions.

• Five (5) or more years of NICU RN experience.
• Delivery room experience.
• Work experience in an academic medical center.
• PICC certification.
• Spanish language proficiency.

• Rotating position between days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be willing to work nights and weekends and to be available for three to four shifts per month, including one major holiday per year.
• Work locations primarily at UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center.
• Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on‑call, and locations based on the 24‑hour medical‑center business needs.
