Regulatory Compliance Specialist, Occupational Health & Safety
REPORTS TO:
Safety Coordinator, Safety Supervisor

Duties / Responsibilities- Works under close supervision
- Assist the HS&E Department in ensuring compliance with Austal Safety Policies, Austal Fire and Flooding Plan, Corporate, State, and Federal regulations and guidelines regarding occupational safety & health
- Work with employees on safety issues and when employees request assistance on a variety of safety and risk/accident prevention concerns
- Perform site and equipment inspections, assist in the completion of accident investigations and safety inspections
- Perform safety surveys to identify and evaluate occupational health, safety and environmental conditions
- Conduct comprehensive on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices
- Recommend corrective actions for temporary work stoppages or closings of areas
- Provide first‑response medical assistance until the arrival of Austal medical team
- Calibrate, use and interpret air monitoring equipment
- Conduct monthly inspection programs (fire extinguishers, air monitoring, vehicle checks and eye wash stations) and complete necessary paperwork in a timely manner
- Extinguish live fires at the incipient stage
- Respond to and mitigate small hazardous material spills promptly
- Work with other safety personnel, supervisors and managers and take direction
- Operate ships’ onboard fire suppression systems as required
- Comply with Austal’s employee handbook, general guidelines, company procedures and policies
- Conduct health, safety and environmental workplace investigations
- Perform other related duties as assigned
The employee must be able to tour all vessels and work sites, perform regular and occasional lifting of 20–75 lb, climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding, work at heights up to 12 feet, and work in confined spaces. The role requires standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, using hand‑to‑hand or arm movements, maintaining balance on uneven surfaces, and using personal protective equipment safely. The employee must be able to withstand cold and hot temperatures and respond to verbal and audible commands.
WorkEnvironment
Regular exposure to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, outside weather, extreme heat, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and loud noise (typically > 90 dB). Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience- One to two years of related EHS experience, or equivalent education and experience (prior military, police or professional fire service may be considered in lieu of education)
- Demonstrated knowledge of health, safety and environmental standards, practices, and procedures
- Basic OSHA safety training certifications in 29 CFR 1915, 1910 or 1926
- Desire and ability to obtain OSHA and NFPA training to be recognized as a marine competent person for hot work inspections
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including training presentations and report writing
- Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels and in a diverse work group
- Willingness and ability to obtain a medical first responder course within six months of hire
- Willingness and ability to obtain a Confined Space Competent Person Certification within six months of hire
- Willingness and ability to obtain an OSHA Maritime 30‑hour certification within six months of hire
- Ability to work in close and confined spaces, and work any shift, including holidays and on‑call situations
- Ability to remain calm, unemotional and in control when faced with angry or confrontational employees
- Beginner level or higher PC skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Publisher and Adobe products
- OSHA Outreach training related to Shipyard Industry is a plus
- Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application
- Must be able to provide proof of US Person Status
- No felony convictions of theft/deception or violent crimes within seven years of disposition date
- No felony convictions of drug crimes within three years of disposition date
- Willing to submit to a drug screen and a background check
$27.70 - $38.10 per hour (depending on relevant experience)
