SUMMARY

Performs inspections and other quality assurance functions required to substantiate conformance to shipbuilding and repair drawings, specifications, and contract requirements. May evaluate quality system standards and assist in development of quality plans and procedures. Conducts audit, surveillance, drafts reports, reviews technical documentation, and reviews/reports on quality discrepancies and data related to production, recommends corrective action, dispositions, process optimization and modifications and performs other quality related administrative tasks in all phases and stages of ship construction and/or repair with little supervision.

Reports to Supervisor or Manager of Quality Assurance. Interfaces with stakeholders including Purchasing, Warehousing, Safety, Production, and Engineering. Outside contacts include equipment vendors, customers, regulatory agencies and Sup Ship/MSC/Navy personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
  • Performs advanced inspection and basic quality engineering functions of shipbuilding and ship repair work in accordance with established policies to ensure compliance with technical requirements
  • Ensure correct materials, fabrication, and installation procedures are utilized during production processes
  • Evaluate results from tests and inspections to determine acceptability
  • Advanced understanding of technical documents including drawings, specifications, standards, test procedures, work instructions, NAVSEA Standard Items, and contract requirements
  • Experience with calibrated equipment. Ability to validate calibration of equipment, gauges, and tools used in production
  • Ability to recognize and document nonconformance’s per company policy and initiate root cause analysis, propose corrective action, and develop preventative actions
  • Ability to perform process audits and surveillances, draft audit reports, and brief senior management with minimal oversight
  • Drafts, reviews, and/or submits QA reports and technical documents
  • Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs
  • Capable of providing training and mentoring to peers
  • Capable of solving advanced quality issues with minimal oversight
  • Performs other Quality Assurance tasks including Quality Engineering functions when assigned
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School education or equivalent;
    Additional technical education or college education a plus
  • Four to seven (4 –
    7) years of Quality Assurance or related experience preferred
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding and repair operations required
  • Technical knowledge of ship construction and repair processes including welding, structural, machinery, electrical piping, ventilation, flushing including knowledge of various measuring instruments related to inspections.
  • Computer literate; knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and IFS Quality Modules a plus
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, integrity, presentation skills, problem solving skills
  • Positive attitude and determination to help others required
  • Understands blueprints, standard/specifications, regulatory body requirements, and ship specifications
  • Must be a team player
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to perform the essentials of the position including working in a shipyard environment, the ability to climb ladders, operate moving machinery, work at heights, go into tanks, voids and cofferdams. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Successful accomplishment of the assigned tasks will directly relate to NASSCO's ability to build ships in a cost effective manner, reducing rework and providing a quality product to the customer.

PAY SCALE

$63,000 - $85,700
