General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies. General Atomics Advanced Fabrication Technology in Torrey Pines is seeking a Software Engineer with 5–10 years of experience and a strong background in dimensional metrology and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).

This role focuses on developing and supporting software solutions that interface with CMM equipment and metrology systems used in advanced fabrication, inspection, and production environments. The position is predominantly onsite (90%) to enable close collaboration with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams and hands-on work with metrology equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain software tools and applications that support metrology and CMM inspection workflows for advanced fabrication programs.
  • Integrate CMMs and other metrology equipment with internal systems (e.g., databases, MES, PLM, or ERP) to streamline data collection, traceability, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain interfaces, scripts, and automation routines to improve CMM programming efficiency and inspection throughput.
  • Work with manufacturing, quality, and design engineering to translate GD&T and inspection requirements into robust, repeatable software and measurement solutions.
  • Develop automated reporting, dashboards, and data visualization tools for measurement and inspection data.
  • Troubleshoot software and system issues related to CMM operation, data transfer, and metrology applications.
  • Participate in code reviews, configuration management, and documentation of software designs, test plans, and user instructions.
  • Support validation, verification, and testing of new or modified metrology software and CMM processes.
  • Provide technical support and training to engineers, technicians, and operators on metrology-related software tools and workflows.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent experience.
  • Progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Hands‑on experience with metrology and CMM equipment (operation, programming support, or data integration).
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used in engineering environments (such as C#, C++, Python, or similar).
  • Experience working with databases (SQL or No

    SQL) and data structures for measurement/inspection data.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and how it applies to inspection and measurement.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to work closely with cross‑functional teams on the shop floor and in lab environments.
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite at least 90% of the time at the Torrey Pines facility.
Preferred Qualifications
