The position supports the Ministry’s Fisheries Research and Conservation Programme by conducting baseline and comprehensive fisheries inventory assessments of fishing grounds. The role involves implementing detailed field surveys, collecting ecological and biological data, including water quality monitoring using specialized equipment, profiling fishing grounds, and assisting in research to evaluate fishery resources, habitat conditions, and environmental factors influencing species distribution and population trends.
The incumbent will work closely with the Fisheries Technical Officer to provide critical technical support for sustainable fisheries management and planning through accurate and timely field data collection and reporting.
1. Conduct baseline and comprehensive fisheries inventory assessments of coastal and inland fishing grounds to support national fisheries research and conservation objectives.
2. Implement detailed field surveys, including profiling of fishing grounds and habitats, to assess fishery resources, cetaceans and other species of special interest, including population trends and distribution.
3. Collect ecological and biological data, including fish species sampling (with emphasis on ciguatera-prone species) and monitor protected or vulnerable species.
4. Perform water quality monitoring and water sampling using specialized equipment to evaluate environmental conditions influencing fisheries productivity and ecosystem health.
5. Assist in research activities assessing habitat conditions, environmental drivers, and their impacts on fisheries resources and species of special interest.
6. Provide technical field support to the Fisheries Technical Officer through accurate data collection, preliminary analysis and timely reporting.
7. Maintain accurate records, sample integrity, and data management systems to support sustainable fisheries management, conservation planning, and policy development.
8. Work in accordance with the Fijian Constitution (2013), Fisheries legislations, Occupational Health and Safety legislation and other applicable regulations to meet the operational needs of the Ministry of Fisheries
Knowledge & ExperienceApplicants for employment must be Fijian Citizens, under Age 60, in sound health, with a clear police record. The successful applicant will be required to provide a medical certificate and police clearance as a condition of employment.
