TITLE
Research Assistant I
POSITION SUMMARYWe currently looking for a Research Assistant in the lab of Ardem Patapoutian at Scripps Research. The Patapoutian laboratory uses a combination of genetics, chemical biology, in vivo assays, and cell culture to study how we sense touch, pain, and other pressures within the peripheral nervous system. Previous research technicians from the lab have been co‑authors on major scientific publications and have gained acceptance to prestigious graduate and/or medical programs.
Our lab is composed of intelligent, driven, caring, and kind individuals who collaborate across projects and institutions to obtain meaningful scientific data.
The Patapoutian Lab is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to contribute to our cutting‑edge research in mechanosensation. This position will consist of 50/50 research and lab maintenance duties. Research (50%):
The successful candidate will work closely with a graduate student or postdoc mentor on projects designed to better understand the molecular mechanisms of mechanosensitive ion channels such as PIEZO
2. Lab maintenance (50%):
The successful candidate will work independently to maintain the organization, inventory, and equipment quality and upkeep of the laboratory.
This position is evenly split between research and laboratory operations.
Research (50%)- Work efficiently and cooperatively to assist postdocs, graduate students, and other lab members with experiments.
- Perform a variety of laboratory and investigative procedures, including routine experimental techniques such as DNA isolation and preparation, PCR, molecular cloning, tissue culture, and animal behavior.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area.
- Collaborate with team members to optimize experimental protocols and troubleshoot issues.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and organized records of experiments and findings.
- Independently manage lab organization, including taking inventory of lab supplies, ordering and receiving shipments, and maintaining a clean and well‑organized lab environment.
- Keep the lab spaces clean and stocked, including regular glass washing and autoclaving lab glassware.
- Maintain the cleanliness and quality of fridges, freezers, and other experimental equipment.
- Assist with other support duties relating to lab management and operations as required.
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemical biology, neuroscience, or a related field.
- Requires 1-3 years of research experience (during undergraduate related experience may be considered). Candidates possessing a Master’s degree, 0-2 years experience required.
- BONUS, but not required:
Experience with DNA isolation and preparation, PCR, molecular cloning, tissue/cell culture, or animal behavior. - Exemplary organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
