Under the direction of the Principal Investigator(s), the incumbent will perform complex professional statistical work and provide specialized data management and programming support to project teams; consult and conduct analyses requiring advanced statistical and programming knowledge; conduct research, adaptation and application of existing and novel statistical methods; and perform other related duties as required.

The Incumbent will typically spend a majority of time implementing and/or adapting mathematical statistical models for analyses of technical data from longitudinal epidemiological studies, computerizing study questionnaires and forms using Questionnaire Development System (QDS) and Microsoft ACCESS, designing and maintaining databases for various projects, writing SAS code to generate tables and graphical displays for reports, conducting data monitoring and collaborating with members of the field team to identify and troubleshoot data related issues, extracting and preparing data sets and related documentation for sharing with other users and stakeholders, including large national repositories, and prioritizing and monitoring project timelines and tasks related to statistical analyses and programming to ensure timely delivery of output.

The Incumbent will also perform statistical consultation and data analysis requiring advanced and current knowledge of statistical theory and the ability to research and adapt new methodology to address research problems using epidemiological data. Examples of such activity include development of statistical models to assess relationships between variables (e.g., association, causation, mediation, moderation) using statistical methods such as generalized linear mixed models (GLMM), generalized estimating equations (GEE), Cox regression, segmented regression, factor analysis, principal components analysis, latent class analyses, and structural equation modeling with appropriate attention to specification of usage of statistical methods and tests of assumptions, numerical accuracy and correct interpretation of results.

Other duties include assisting the principal investigators in planning research designs on complicated problems or large-scale bi-national studies which may result in grants; determine from discussions and related written material the purposes and objectives of various studies, the scope and methods of approach to problems, and the restrictions inherent in experiments; discuss with investigators possible statistical analyses of their research data;

devise statistical analyses plans, conduct power calculations and related graphical displays and write sections related to statistical analyses and power calculations.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in‑depth statistical analyses and/or research software programming techniques. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience/training.
  • Thorough knowledge of research function. Extensive statistical experience with multivariable modeling, longitudinal data, correlated data, non-parametric analyses, hierarchical modeling, incidence calculations, mediation and moderation analyses and experience with large (thousands of subjects and variables) population‑based surveys. Experience with checking assumptions required for various statistical procedures as well as familiarity with methods related to missing data and other potential sources of bias.
  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Experience with statistical programming for database management and data analysis. Advanced knowledge of SAS, including SAS macros, and knowledge of how to write SAS code to generate tables and graphs that meet standards for presentation and publication; familiarity with SPSS, R and/or Stata. Proven ability to manipulate raw data and apply statistical practices.
