What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity?
At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.
Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.
As a Systems Integration Engineer 1 at Illumina, you will work in a collaborative, team‑oriented environment to help develop and test genomic analysis tools at the leading edge of research. You will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality, robust products through the integration of hardware, software, chemistry, and biological assay components. A key aspect of this role is executing structured experiments, diagnosing complex system‑level issues, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams to drive problems to root cause.
Key Responsibilities- Perform hands‑on integration, testing and troubleshooting of DNA sequencing systems and assay platforms, with a focus on chemical or biochemical assay workflows
- Execute system‑level troubleshooting across biochemical assays, hardware, software, and application components
- Investigate technical problems by analyzing data, forming hypotheses, and proposing practical solutions in collaboration with cross‑functional colleagues
- Track, log and communicate issues encountered during development using established documentation and issue‑tracking processes
- Apply analytical techniques and tools to analyze experimental and system‑level data, identify trends, and support data‑driven decision making
- Execute design verification plans, collect and review data, and contribute to verification reports
- Author and maintain clear documentation of experimental procedures, protocols, results, deviations, and observations
- Work effectively within cross‑functional project teams (research, product development, manufacturing, etc.)
- Present technical findings, risks, and recommendations to engineering and scientific stakeholders
- Foundational understanding of, or keen interest to learn sequencing systems, assay platforms, and associated wet laboratory techniques
- Hands‑on wet laboratory experience (academic or industry) working with biochemical assays, instrumentation, or complex experimental workflows.
- Broad scientific knowledge across disciplines such as molecular biology, chemistry, software, instrumentation, and data analysis
- Ability to analyze and draw conclusions from large data sets
- Familiarity with AI tools, scientific programming or scripting (e.g., Python) for data analysis is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively in technical discussions across assay, software, engineering, or manufacturing teams
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and collaborative, with the ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences
- Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary, and evolving research and development environment
- Typically requires 0 to 2 years of relevant professional experience (including internships, co‑ops, or academic research)
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in engineering or science discipline (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field)
- Complex system troubleshooting skills
- Ability to think critically, learn quickly, and adapt to changing priorities and development needs.
- Aptitude for independent research in addition to working well within a team
Strong preference will be given to individuals with intense curiosity about the world around them and demonstrated ability for digging deep into experimental methods and results.
