Job Description

As a Research Ecologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Lead Hawaiian monk seal assessment research for the Marine Mammal Assessment Program at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC). Lead the design and implementation of assessment studies and undertake statistical analyses to characterize abundance and demography, describe population dynamics, assess natural and anthropogenic impacts, and evaluate recovery strategies. Lead project teams, delegate work, and identify scientific priorities.
  • Conduct mark-recapture and other statistical analyses for stock assessment models relevant to the biology, ecology, and status of marine mammal populations, particularly Hawaiian monk seals. Apply ingenuity and originality to the adaptation of existing experimental techniques or lead the development of novel methods for the statistical analysis of data for stock assessments and other supporting analyses for protected species and fisheries management in the Pacific Islands Region.
  • Serve as a principal scientific advisor on biological and ecosystem science work and assist personnel participating in studies aboard research cruises and other field efforts. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports and give presentations on these findings at research progress reviews, council meetings and working groups, public outreach events, and scientific conferences.
  • Mentor and lead junior scientists in performing analyses and related research activities. Develop collaborative relationships with stakeholders, interacting and serving with various panels, committees, and technical working groups, including various Federal, state, international, and professional organizations.

NOTE:

These duties are described at the full performance level of the ZP-4; the ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance. POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires the operation of a Federal motor vehicle. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a government vehicle in completion of assigned tasks i.e. site visits, field research, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position has physical requirements. Must be able to bend, stoop and lift up to 40lbs unassisted and satisfy all requirements to go in the field, including to sea.

This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band. The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12. The ZP-4 is equivalent to the GS-13/14. The Full Performance level is the ZP-4.
