DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, assist with maintaining algal cultures and supporting laboratory experiments focused on the growth and bromoform production of the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis. Perform routine laboratory procedures, including sterile techniques, seawater sterilization, microscopy, imaging, sample isolation, and culture maintenance. Monitor culture health, document contamination, and implement established mitigation procedures. Assist with maintaining a living algal "seed bank", collecting environmental and physiological data, performing routine measurements, and conducting basic statistical analyses.

Support bromoform production using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), maintain accurate laboratory records, and assist with preparing research summaries and data visualizations. Work collaboratively with postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and laboratory staff, and guide laboratory volunteers on routine laboratory procedures and culture maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge of algal biology, physiology, and laboratory culture techniques.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with seaweeds or with aquaculture.
  • Knowledge in the field of phycology.
  • Prior knowledge of maintaining algal cultures in a laboratory environment.
  • Proven experience with algal culturing and sterile techniques.
  • Experience with microscopy and image analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of experimental design principles.
  • Knowledge of basic algal physiological assessments, including measuring growth rates, photosynthesis, and fluorescence.
  • Familiarity with using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) machine.
  • Demonstrated ability to enter and work with data, create graphs, and perform basic statistical analysis.
  • Ability to communicate technical information and summarize research activities.
  • Experience with general lab protocols. Skill in the use of standard laboratory equipment. Demonstrated lab safety knowledge.
  • Experience and skill with computer applications including Mircrosoft office.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records with strict attention to detail.
  • Experience with hazardous materials handling and lab safety. Knowledge of chemical regulations needed for the safe handling and storage of chemicals.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact, using tact and diplomacy, with diverse personalities, including academic, staff, student employees, and other institutions/organizations.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $62,891 - $75,022 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.12 - $35.93
