Coral Reef Research Assistant

The position may involve travel to coral reefs and scientific diving in locations like Hawai'i, Fiji, and Costa Rica. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for administrative duties as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI), including assisting in the preparation of manuscripts and technical reports, coordinating lab meetings, managing equipment and supplies, maintaining laboratory safety standards, and providing hands-on training for new personnel.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college, including courses in the natural, physical, or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge in ecophysiology and photophysiology to analyze data related to photosynthesis.
  • Familiarity with general animal husbandry tasks.
  • Experience in basic lab techniques such as making buffers, checking pH solutions, and photographic imaging.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes
  • Knowledge and experience in general lab protocols. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.
  • General knowledge of coral science, including relevant laboratory techniques.
  • Experience working with and in the preparation of scientific reagents, including common buffers and stock solutions.
  • Experience in making algal media and maintaining algal cultures.
  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records, including the use of lab notebooks and online, with strict attention to detail.
  • Experience in data collection.
  • Ability to order and maintain laboratory supplies.
  • Must be willing and able to work with corals.
