We are currently accepting applications for the Kagnoff Endowed Chair in the  This prestigious faculty position is intended to recruit an internationally distinguished physician-scientist or scientist whose work is advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases through innovative research, exceptional scholarship, and academic leadership.

The Kagnoff Endowed Chair honors the clinical and scientific legacy of Dr. Martin

F. Kagnoff, whose pioneering contributions transformed the fields of mucosal immunology, host-microbe interactions, and gastrointestinal diseases, especially celiac disease. UC San Diego is home to one of the world's leading program in gastroenterology and hepatology. The Kagnoff Endowment provides dedicated support to accelerate scientific discovery and enhance research excellence.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is ranked number 1 in research and teaching among global universities, and ranked number 27 in clinical care by the U.S. News & World Report. Faculty benefit from a highly collaborative scientific environment that includes partnerships across the School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center, Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, Sanford Stem Cell Institute, and numerous interdisciplinary research centers throughout UC San Diego and the San Diego biomedical community.

The Division also serves as home to the NIH-funded San Diego Digestive Diseases Research Center (SDDRC), which provides outstanding core facilities and fosters multidisciplinary collaborations in digestive disease research, and the UC San Diego MASLD Research Center, an internationally recognized program advancing fundamental, translational, and clinical research in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). These resources, together with strong partnerships across the San Diego biomedical research community, provide an outstanding environment for scientific discovery and innovation.

We seek candidates with internationally recognized research programs spanning any area relevant to digestive and liver diseases. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Gastrointestinal biology and diseases
• Hepatology and liver disease
• Mucosal immunology
• Microbiome science
• Host-microbe interactions
• Inflammation and immune‑mediated diseases
• Cancer biology
• Regenerative medicine
• Precision medicine
• Artificial intelligence and computational biology
• Systems biology
• Clinical trials

The successful candidate will develop and sustain an internationally recognized research program supported by competitive extramural funding; provide scientific leadership within the Division and Department; teach and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and junior faculty; foster interdisciplinary collaborations across UC San Diego; and contribute to the educational, research, and clinical missions of the Division. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to build innovative research programs, recruit outstanding trainees and collaborators, and strengthen UC San Diego's position as a global leader in digestive disease research.
