Position Title: Aquaculture Technician

Job Classification: Full-time/Non-exempt

Salary: $18-20/hour plus benefits

Location: San Diego, CA

Job Summary: Assist Project leaders in successfully conducting shellfish aquaculture and microbial management research. Culture technicians are responsible for participating in all aspects of routine husbandry and associated aquaculture research. Work is performed under the supervision of hatchery managers and research scientists. Live plant and animal caretaking occurs daily year-round, so the ability to work weekends and holidays is required.

Job Functions:

  • Husbandry. Support the production of oysters, including collecting, feeding, spawning, rearing, and health monitoring. Assist in all other aspects of fish and shellfish husbandry as needed.
  • Microalgae production. Support the production, maintenance, sanitation, and allocation of microalgae culture.
  • Microbiology/Molecular Biology. Support animal health testing and microbiological screening efforts for aquaculture research.
  • Safety and Biosecurity. Help to ensure that all safety and biosecurity measures are being complied with and help in the development of new and improved procedures as appropriate. Strict biosecurity will be required in quarantine systems.
  • System Maintenance. Help ensure that marine life support systems are fully operational at all times by identifying and reporting problems as they occur.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting. Document all procedures and keep neat and accurate records of all husbandry activities; help develop and update written protocols; assist with reporting needs as appropriate.
  • Other. Participate in other aquaculture research as needed, such as water quality monitoring, husbandry, and troubleshooting. This may include fish, seaweed, and other invertebrates as necessary.

    Physical Requirements and

    Working Conditions:

    • A college degree in biology preferred.
    • Experience with marine aquaculture or aquariums, including shellfish and microalgae, preferred but not required.
    • Experience with microbiology, microscopy, and molecular biology is a plus.
    • Physical ability to team lift and carry up to 50lbs.
    • Self-motivated, hardworking individual with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing to recognize information at normal spoken word levels and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone.
    • Daily activities will vary seasonally, but will include both outdoor (hatchery raceways and tanks onsite or field collection offsite) and indoor (hatchery building and office/computer work) environments that can be wet and damp with moderate noise levels.
    • Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
