Job Description and DutiesThe Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking an enthusiastic, open‑minded and driven individual to fill our Scientific Aid position. The primary focus of this role is to support the management of invertebrate fisheries by editing and entering recreational and commercial fisheries data. The position will also assist with fieldwork, vessel and gear maintenance, data analyses, drafting reports, and outreach and education activities.
- Support staff in responding to public inquiries, developing educational and outreach materials, and participating in meetings, workshops, and educational events.
- Conduct dockside or market sampling of commercially landed invertebrate species.
- Maintain project databases and research libraries and respond to requests for data.
- Provide support to other CDFW projects or staff, as needed.
This classification is a non‑testing classification.
Working ConditionsAbility to work both in an office and field environment, use standard computer equipment and lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional fieldwork may involve handling live and dead fish and invertebrates. Must be able to work occasional weekends. Approximately 10% travel within the state of California may be required, including overnight stays up to 2 days.
Minimum RequirementsApplicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed in the Class Specification.
- Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.
- Applicants who receive public assistance must identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.
- Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.
- Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.
- Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non‑testing classification opening.
- Familiarity with fisheries management principles.
- Interest in a career in biology, ecology, or natural resource management.
- Strong written communication and report preparation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel); familiarity with GIS and statistical programming is a plus.
- Good writing, word processing, and data entry skills.
- Good organizational skills and ability to keep accurate records.
- Experience working on small boats on the open ocean and/or operating and maintaining a boat.
Good communication skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, professional integrity, ability to interact with the public, and willingness to work remotely and in an office setting. Ask questions when duties are unclear.
