Research Scientist, Environmental Science
GEI Consultants, Inc. has an immediate opening in our San Diego office for an entry‑to‑mid‑level analytical chemist. This individual will work onsite at Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC) in San Diego, CA and will be responsible for supporting a wide range of bench‑level analytical chemistry needs and as‑needed support for other related environmental programs.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties- Bench‑level analytical chemistry support for analysis of trace metals, mercury, PFAS, and other compounds in sediment, tissue, stormwater, groundwater, and seawater.
- Perform analysis of trace metals using a Thermo Element XR high‑resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR‑ICP‑MS).
- Analyze total mercury (THg) in water per USEPA method 1631 on a Tekran 2600 and methyl mercury (MeHg) in water per USEPA method 1630 on a Tekran 2700.
- SPE extraction and analysis of PFAS compounds from tissue, sediment, and aqueous samples per USEPA Methods 537.1 and 1633 using a Thermo Orbitrap LC‑MS/MS.
- Support senior staff with regulatory compliance assessment and R&D programs, including laboratory toxicity testing; environmental data management and summaries; QA/QC; statistical calculations; report preparation; literature searches and reviews as needed.
- Support proposal and cost estimate development.
- Understand and comply with Health and Safety requirements; develop Health and Safety Plans as required.
- Understand and comply with QA/QC procedures; assist with development of Quality Assurance Project Plans.
- Support development of Standard Operating Procedures, other QA/QC documentation, and laboratory certification needs.
- Apply statistical software to support data analysis (familiarity with R and Graph Pad PRISM is preferred; ability to develop and apply Excel macros is a bonus).
- Develop familiarity with and support common field toxicology and risk assessment tools, such as toxicity and bioaccumulation testing/sampling, biological surveys, and passive sampling devices. Some field work including sampling, surveys, and deployment of sampling and monitoring devices is expected.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams in laboratory and field settings.
- Participate in professional, industry, and/or policy groups and pursue professional development and advancement.
- B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field.
- 1 to 5 years of progressive experience in the environmental field, focusing on environmental chemistry and toxicology.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.
- Ability to apply full‑feature statistical software (e.g., R, Graph Pad PRISM).
- Willingness to perform field work as needed.
- Willingness to travel and spend time at other GEI offices or DoD locations to work with project teams.
- Market‑competitive compensation, including eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
- Pay range: $60,000 – $85,000 per year.
- Comprehensive benefits program (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and more).
- Well‑being program and paid parental leave.
- Commuter benefits.
- Hybrid work schedules and cell phone stipends.
- GEI University with continuing education assistance and tuition reimbursement.
- Professional development and advancement opportunities.
- Paid holidays and generous paid time off.
