Position Summary: The F/A-18 Powerplants Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, and repair of the F404-GE-402 engines and related powerplant systems on the F/A-18 aircraft. This includes work on engine components, fuel systems, afterburners, intakes, exhaust systems, and associated support equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains repairs and modifies aircraft engines, fuel systems, and secondary power systems of moderate difficulty, maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components, applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions, and applies required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation.
- Applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufacturers manuals. Work typically requires a thoroughly comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures, and replacement of components, a thorough knowledge of aircraft engines, fuel systems and secondary power systems. The ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems. A detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tension meters, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc.
is required. - Must possess excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule. This mechanic will be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records.
- Ability to troubleshoot engineer, APU, secondary power and airframe related systems. Use color coded charts of aircraft plumbing and interpret applicable technical data.
Qualifications, Knowledge and
Skills Required:
- Minimum four (4) years’ experience with USN/USMC F/A-18 Aircraft preferably as a Power Plant Mechanic.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Should be a self-motivator and work with minimum supervision.
- Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks is mandatory.
- Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties. Must have a valid driver license.
- Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Must be able to meet physical requirements associated with and/or pass any medical examination requirements related to performing daily assigned tasks. US Citizenship required due to the nature of the work.
- Must be qualified as a Plane Captain and Capable of operating support equipment.
- Training in Basic Aviation, Aviation Machinist Mate (AD), Class A1 (Aviation Machinist Mate – Jet Engine), and F/A-18 Power Plants and related systems organizational maintenance of equivalent.
- Ability to document maintenance utilizing the Naval Aviation Logistics Command Information System (NALCOMIS)
- Knowledge of Naval maintenance publications and maintenance requirement cards and OPNAVINST 4790.2
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Requires frequent bending, reaching and climbing.
- May frequently lift and carry items weighing up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift heavier items with the assistance of other workers.
