Position: Production Carpenter - 141028

This position is a 100% career appointment for 9 months (typically mid-September through mid-June) with a 3-month non-paid leave during summer.

Description

Consistently ranked among the top graduate theatre training programs in the country, UC San Diego's Department of Theatre & Dance offers undergraduate degrees, MFA degrees in Acting, Dance, Directing, Design (Costume, Lighting, Scenic, Sound), Stage Management, and Playwriting, and a PhD in Theatre and Drama. The Theatre & Dance department also shares a close relationship with the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, where MFA candidates are provided professional residencies.

Under supervision, serve as Production Carpenter, as that term is commonly understood in the theatre industry, for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Construct scenic and prop elements; assist with supervision of student construction crews; assist with strikes; assist with maintenance of tools, supplies, shops, and performance spaces; participate in facilities maintenance and upgrade projects. Act as the production carpenter for production assigned and lead the student crews in these productions.

Participate in other special projects as needed, and all other duties as assigned.

This position is 100% in-person. No remote work will be permitted. Must be amenable to a fluctuating work schedule. Some weekend and evening work required.

Must have access to reliable transportation and/or a California Driver's License to drive a UC vehicle.

Qualifications
  • Experience and skill in various types of scenic construction; wood, metal, plastics, etc.
  • Knowledge of technical theatre; scenery, properties, paints, and electrics.
  • Ability to read and work from scenic drafting and drawings.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use and maintenance of scene shop equipment; hand and power tools and major wood, metal, and welding equipment.
  • Knowledge of stage rigging and applications in the movement of scenery.
  • Ability to meet established deadlines and schedules for project builds and shop maintenance needs

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,756 - $69,802 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.14 - $33.43

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
